Week 10- Time and the Image lab

Given the title of  Time for our next project, I decided to look at the idea of absence and presence, and came up several images taken with a long shutter speed to capture a ghostly image of presence.
My favourite photo of the set was an image of myself taken in my room which looked like a double exposure.

Wendy McMurdo and Hiroshi Sugimoto

Wendy McMurdo, Computer Class, Edinburgh II, 1997
Wendy McMurdo, The Somnambulist, 1995

Both these photographers captured the idea of Time in different ways.  Wendy McMurdo's images have an element of tension to them- the objects the children have been using are no longer there, yet they are in a pose as if they are which creates an unease and tension to the characters, they really have been frozen in time and place.

Sugimoto's work titled 'Theatre' shows a great feeling of absence and uncertainty.  I feel like time is moving on in his work, as shown by the white screen, but yet the theatres are deserted which makes looking at the work unnerving.

I decided that I would to pursue the idea of absence/ presence and tension within a piece of work.

I rephotographed the image of myself again as separate images so the subjects were always in focus and solid, and then overlayed them using Photoshop.

My work shows that over time, a personal awareness of one's presence can intensify; you can leave your mark on a place, making it your own in some way depending on how long you stay in said place, tied up with personal feelings about it.
