Week 9- Time

In our class, we watched an interview by 'The Eye' with Sam Taylor-Wood.  I knew some of her previous work, but I didn't realise that she worked with both film and photography, so I found it very interesting to listen to how she related to both her new and old work, and how it could be related to our new Image Lab project on Time.

Images I found to be most interesting and relevant to Image Lab were part of the Five Revolutionary Seconds series. Taylor- Wood's intent with the work was to create a 'different passage of time to photography', and to capture an instantaneous view of a situation or moment.
The images have an ambiguity to them, allowing the viewer to make up their own mind as to what the people are doing, their relationship (or lack of) to each other, and what their reasons are for their actions in the photo.

I took away from the interview that no matter how bleak, obscure, heartfelt or apparently voyeuristic the work might be, Sam Taylor- Wood's work always has a concept or a personal story to tell, a reason why she has created the image.

After looking at her images, Taylor- Wood's work has inspired me to capture not simply a moment in time, but a reasoning behind the moment; a story or feeling behind a photograph, or series of photographs that has depth, and has not simply been created 'for the sake of it'.
